More Art History

Here are a couple more art history videos I’m sharing with visitors to my site, just in case you love this stuff as much as I do. Art history has had a tremendous impact on my jewelry designs, so I thought I would share the influences that have impacted the jewelry of Blue Diva Designs. I highly admire Rembrandt and Mark Rothko, so here are two videos you might find interesting. Happy watching!

Here they are:

Mark Rothko:

If you have any interesting videos you would like to share, let me know. I’ll take a peak and possibly include them on my site.

Art’s Influence on Blue Diva Designs

Art history is a subject that I never find tiring. I’ve spent the past several years taking so many art, jewelry making, graphic design, and art history classes, your head would spin. These classes have made me more sensitive to the needs of my target audience: sophisticated, cultured women. I love taking art history classes since they keep me in tune with the history of art. I can apply this knowledge when I’m going through the design process to create jewelry that will resonate with my target audience of sophisticated, cultured women.

My home in Laguna Niguel, California is bursting at the seams due to my many art and art history books I use to build my knowledge of art and jewelry designing.

Talented art historian and author Simon Schama profiles eight artistic mavericks in his art history series, The Power of Art. He created videos covering Van Gogh, Picasso, Caravaggio, Bernini, Rembrandt, David, Turner and Rothko. The first episode of the series aired in October 2006.

I hope you find these videos as mesmerizing as I do. I’ve become obsessed with art history these days. I can’t get enough of this stuff. Simon Schuma won the International Emmy Award for Arts Programming for his series. Below are a couple of art history videos that you might find interesting.

Here are two of Simon Schama’s Power of Art videos from his series.

I will continue to look for interesting art videos and post them on this website under the “Blogs” tab.

If you have any that you believe are great, please send me the URL and I will take a look. I’m always searching for new material to include in my blog.

Multiple Necklace Look-Fresh & New

I love the multiple necklace look. Yes, I love it and wear it often. Try it and see if you agree. It’s a very cool look! Choose a pretty basic style like ones listed below. By the way, the jewelry layering also applies to bracelets. Below is a basic David Yurman sterling silver bracelet with a touch of gold. It’s great.

I love accessorizing with more than one necklace. It gives an ensemble a feeling of texture and interest. I love wearing my Essy or David Yurman chain necklaces that come with beautiful cross pendants. With a nice quality cross necklace as the base, I will often add one of my elegant, classic necklaces. The combination of the two is fabulous. It is like the wearer is coming up with an interesting new necklace combination. It’s a look I like a great deal and use often.

Below is a cross necklace that I love. It is so ethnic, but cool. I came across it online and I posted it on my Pinterest account. However, I don’t know where I can buy it. I will buy it when I find it for sale. This is the type of necklace that would look fabulous with one of my Blue Diva Designs necklaces.

I like to wear this style of necklace along with one of my designs to change up the look. It makes a look a little more casual and is a great look when you want to change things up. My necklaces go great with a basic sterling silver cross necklace. The combination is fresh and attractive. It’s different without being over the top.

Below is a man wearing the multiple cross/necklace look. He is using multiple crosses and different style chains. What a great look! A woman could wear this look. It reminds me of a look you might wear to a beach outing. It’s casual, but cool. I love it.

Here are two more multi-necklace looks. The first look is cool and could be worn on days where you really want to look funky or go to a wild club. It’s definitely a bit over the top, but fun! The second one is interesting and more subdued.

Below are some of my jewelry designs that would look great with a sterling silver pendant and chain. If you aren’t into crosses, try something else.

Tell me what you think about the multiple necklace look? Do you like it? It’s good for a change.

Makeup for Today’s Woman

Today’s women are beginning to embrace the limited makeup look—the focus on “less is more.” I see this softer makeup look as a refreshing trend. Take a look at Jennifer Lopez. These days, you often see her with softer eye makeup and lips, along with barely-there face makeup and defined eyebrows. In the photo below, Jennifer is wearing darker lipstick to dress up her look for a more sultry evening look. But, you can clearly see Jennifer’s softer, classier makeup.

She is stunning this way. She looks more confident, and her natural beauty shines through. (This photo of Jennifer Lopez was taken by Steve Granitz/WireImage)

73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards - Arrivals      Here, Jennifer is wearing fresh, contemporary makeup, compared to the heavy made-up look used by women in the 80s and 90s. Women are becoming more comfortable in their own skins. They no longer feel that they have to cover up their faces with heavy makeup to look beautiful. That’s pretty darn refreshing, wouldn’t you say?

Take a look at Morgan Fairchild. She is an attractive gal, but she doesn’t look nearly half as attractive as she could without all this heavy makeup weighing her down. Below she is pictured back in the 80s when she was on Dallas and used a more heavy-handed approach to her makeup application. I’m sorry, but for me, this is over the top and gawdy.

MorganFairchild07    Many of today’s women are in the working world. In that world, it is imperative that you wear less makeup in order to be taken seriously. A simple, but authentic look really enhances a professional woman’s look and helps her look credible and genuine. It allows her natural beauty to come shining through.

Take a look at the style of two of my favorite women in the public eye: Natasha McElhorne and Kamala Harris, an actress and government official. Take a look at Natasha in Ronin with Robert DeNiro. I love the look of these women. They are so confident and comfortable in their own skins. Both shine and exude a natural beauty that isn’t dragged down by tons of makeup.

These two woman are the type that are always front and center in my mind when I design jewelry. They are sophisticated, worldly, educated, and have a quiet elegance about them. They are fabulous—beautiful, but approachable and authentic.

I see the limited makeup look as a major fashion trend, and boy is it refreshing! I design my jewelry for the intelligent, confident, forward thinking woman that believes in quiet elegance. She gets attention via her quiet manner, not by wearing clothes and jewelry that scream, “look at me.”

I specifically designed Blue Diva Designs for this self-assured, independent woman who understands, as in art, sometimes, less is more.

Below are a few of my necklaces that truly shine on women like these.

What do you think? I’d like to know.

Fashion Chanel Style

Chanel often offers the ultimate fashion experience. Here is a nice video of Chanel’s Fall/Winter 2016/17 show in Paris. Here Chanel is incorporating dark fuchsia and a dusty blue colors and an intriguing combination of textures in both its clothing and over-the-top jewelry layering. It’s interesting, but is it wearable for today’s woman? Not really. I tend to subscribe to the “less is more” philosophy. Check out my jewelry and you will see.

Although it is always fun to watch a Chanel show, most women can’t wear busy clothing and accessories, especially for business attire. They need clothing and jewelry that are elegant and versatile. The over-the-top layering just doesn’t cut it for the typical classic woman.

I follow the philosophy in jewelry that “less is more.” Although I like the layering look on many occasions, sometimes a single simple necklace really sets off an outfit and spells elegance. See some of the simple, but stunning designs below from my collection. These styles look elegant with a business suit, but can also be worn for brunch or a casual outfit. Check out my many necklace styles under my “Collections” tab.

Blue Diva Designs—A Fresh Jewelry Approach

Blue Diva Designs is a line of simply elegant, classic jewelry for the independent, sophisticated woman. She is smart, worldly, and confident. When she enters a room, all eyes are on her since she has incredible presence and style. She quietly, hypnotically grabs attention and doesn’t let go.

The Blue Diva woman wants to be noticed for her intelligence, beauty, and style, not because her jewelry screams, “Here I am, come look at me.” Blue Diva jewelry is designed to subtly put the focus on you.

Hi, I’m Christina Acosta. I’m the creative director and chief jewelry designer for Blue Diva Designs. I came up with the idea of Blue Diva Designs in 2006. I saw an unfulfilled niche in the market for simple, but elegant jewelry for the sophisticated, professional woman, and the rest is history in the making.

I took the next 10 years and learned everything I could about jewelry making, art, graphic design, and art history and applied it to my jewelry designs (Yep, I really spent 10 years doing this). Additionally, I create my own websites, packaging, marketing materials, and social media content. Yes, I do it all! I’m on many of the most popular social media platforms (and some obscure ones), such as Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Tumblr, and the list goes on! You can view many of my social media links by clicking on my “Social Media” tab.

Here are a few of my designs:

I spent years going back to school and studying my brains out in order to create my dream  jewelry line. I already knew the business end since I had already received an MBA in Marketing Management and had worked many years as a marketing executive in the serious worlds of high tech and legal. However, creating unique, stunning, but versatile jewelry was a challenge.

When I design, I keep the worldly, self-confident professional woman in mind. I was this woman for many years, so I intimately know her. She wants elegant, classic jewelry and won’t settle for less. I want my customers to see my jewelry as items to be proudly passed down to future generations. I hope that you see my jewelry as worthy of passing down to future generations of women in your family, and that you will love your pieces as much as I loved making them for you!

My goal is to delight consumers like you who want stunning, stylish, and versatile handmade jewelry. This is the core of what Blue Diva Designs is about. A lot of thought goes into each and every jewelry design. My jewelry doesn’t get bogged down with bells and whistles that don’t make sense and contribute to the necklace losing its focus. You can bring one or two Blue Diva Designs necklaces on an overseas excursion and be set.

My designs are uniquely mine. They represent me as an artist that is constantly learning, sharing, and growing as a designer to produce better and more original jewelry. I’m consistently working at becoming a better and more artistic designer. I will never be complacent, even when I’m 90 and can barely walk. That’s my promise to you!

I’m a native Californian, who was born in San Francisco. I now resides with my husband, Phil (a novel writer), in Laguna Niguel, a beautifully lush and serene city in South Orange County, California. Every single necklace I create is designed and made by yours truly. This is good old American creativity and ingenuity put to work. Please feel free to reach out to me and let me know what you think. I respond to each e-mail I receive.

I’m currently in the process of setting up an online shop where you can buy my jewelry, so please keep checking back. I’m in touch with a few style-conscious California boutiques and department stores that soon will be carrying my jewelry line. I will post retail locations on this website as they become available. So, please stay tuned!

Custom Jewelry

Should you desire a custom necklace, I can design one for you at a very reasonable rate. I can design necklaces for weddings, holidays, special events, and even a favorite outfit. So if you are looking for custom-made jewelry at a price that won’t break the bank, please keep me in mind. I will make you a necklace or bracelet that is stunning, classic, and versatile. This is my specialty and I promise, I will do my best to dazzle you. Feel free to e-mail me for a price quote.

Cross Necklaces

Cross     I’m a big fan of crosses and cross necklaces, and that’s not just because I’m Catholic. To me, the cross represents peace, kindness, and the Christian way of living and thinking (whether or not you are Christian). It represents inclusion and not exclusion. The religious aspect isn’t important; it’s the philosophy behind the religion that is meaningful. I acknowledge and respect all religions that center around kindness and generosity of spirit.

I typically wear a cross necklace every day, even when I’m in a pool teaching swimming (Yep, believe it or not, I’m also a professional swim instructor). Often when I am going out, I’ll wear one of my Blue Diva Designs necklaces along with an 18″chain sporting a cross pendant. I adore this look. It’s so me, mostly because it’s a constant reminder to me to be patient, kind, and positive.

Two of my favorite cross necklaces are by David Yurman and Effy (see below). I love the combination of one of my Blue Diva Designs necklaces along with one of my favorite cross necklaces. I love the idea of mixing and matching necklaces together to achieve my own signature style. I guess it all boils down to using texturing to create your own unique look.

Below are some photos I took on my I-phone of a few of my crosses, two of which are on sterling silver chains. I love, love, love these basic cross necklaces.

Here’s a cross necklace from my line.

I love crosses, so believe me, Blue Diva Designs will always include some necklaces and bracelets that have cross pendants. I will include the cross pendant featured above in some future necklaces. I also plan on including smaller crosses on some necklace and bracelet styles.

If you are a cross lover, you will be dazzled. They will be fabulous, so stay tuned! If you aren’t a cross fan, that’s okay. I still will continue to create jewelry that excludes crosses.

How do you feel about crosses? Are you a fan? Add a comment and let me know your thoughts. I’m all ears!

Jewelry Designs for Today’s Woman

Woman Thinking (1000x800)-01   Who do jewelry designers design for anyway?

I think that a lot of jewelry designers design for themselves and forget about the needs of their target customers. I strongly believe it’s important to keep the needs of your customers front and center during your design process. Yes, it’s important to remain true to your design aesthetic, but your customers’ needs are also crucial. If a classic 18” stylish chunky necklace is needed for a business suit, then that’s what I create, not a necklace for a wedding. I care what my customers think. I listen attentively to my audience and pay attention to what they say. I create jewelry pieces that are appropriate for the various activities that fill the sophisticated woman’s life. My goal is to use my talents to create jewelry that women will cherish and want to wear again and again.

I use quality materials that are stylish and practical. I never include tiny clasps that are difficult to maneuver and make it hard on my audience to use simply because I decided I could buy these cheaper. I hate those clasps, so I never include them in my jewelry. I use more expensive clasps. Each of my necklaces uses a stylish, quality clasps that are easy for my customers to manipulate.

It took me years to learn the valuable lesson of “less is more.” I continue to look for new ways to incorporate simplicity in some of my pieces, paying attention to the tiniest of details, which tends to make my jewelry pieces stunning and wearable. My designs are more attractive, classic, and versatile than most other jewelry out there. This didn’t happen by accident. I listen, grow as an artist, and consistently work at improving my craft and design aesthetic. Studying art and art history helped teach me many valuable lessons artists know about design. I cherish the advice and thoughts I have received over the years from boutique owners, customers, and friends. When designing, I try to remember to simplify when possible. I’ve found that some of my simplest pieces are the most successful because they are elegant, versatile, and great for travel.

You may check out my jewelry designs under the “Collections” tab. Feel free to contact me with your thoughts or comments. I take viewers’ comments seriously and value their input. I will personally respond to everyone that contacts me.

All the best, Christina Acosta
